Christmas Newsletter – December 2010
Is it possible – can another year be over already???
Christmas Greetings and best wishes to all our instructors and students, and we hope that 2011 brings you happy, relaxing and healthy times.
During Term 4, Rod presented some great sessions at the National Annual Seminar in Sydney – at Collaroy from 17th to 19th September. Along with Grandmaster Khor’s insights, students left armed with much more food for thought.

The 34th Annual Queensland Seminar in Brisbane (Oct 29th to 31st) was wonderful – held in the newly renovated Holy Spirit Hall in New Farm. The venue looked great, adorned with the Shaolin Temple, lotus flower pictures, and displays of past China Tours & Straddie Island Retreats. The huge projection screen and wide-screen TVs were great for displaying photos of Academy events and China Tours. Grandmaster Khor was able to enlighten us on many important points to remember to improve our Tai Chi practice, and his insights on the Martial Arts aspects of the Shoulder Pole set & traditional Wushu were informative. Master Rod showed us many ways to adapt our movements, to ensure we kept to the principles of “Nurture, not strain”. Of course, the self-defence session was greatly enjoyed, along with the energetic 5-part Wushu set.
Master Rod made excellent presentations at the recent conferences in Dunedin in New Zealand in November:- “The Australian New Zealand Geriatric Medicine” conference and the “Australian New Zealand Falls Prevention” conference. Rod presented three sessions at the Falls Prevention conference:- a morning Tai Chi workshop, an oral presentation on ‘Translating Research into Practice’, and a poster presentation ‘Falls Prevention Across the Continuum’. Tai Chi is widely accepted in New Zealand for being the best & most cost-effective falls prevention in the community.
Instructor training is available for Volunteer Falls Prevention Leaders, we are happy to include you in our ongoing learning. For this or any other training enquiries about using our methods to help others, please contact Rod (rod@livingchi.com.au)
There has been much hard work and time invested in the total revamp of the Academy website – www.livingchi.com.au – with the new-look website launched recently. Many thanks to Paul Barrs. Please visit the website often, its now updated faster with more info and Twitter too.
An exciting opportunity for the Academy and especially for Master Rod coming early in 2011:- a research project with Dr Richard Lim – Geriatrics at Prince Charles Hospital – it is proposed to trial an Applied Tai Chi intervention for GEM (Geriatric Evaluation and Management) sub-acute patients. These are older patients with serious medical conditions, and the hope is that Tai Chi will assist in many areas eg balance, stress reduction, increased feeling of well-being, better breathing etc.
Coming in 2011
China Tour – Shaolin & Wudang – April 2011
Our group is now dreaming of the adventures we’ll have travelling to China with Grandmaster Khor and Master Rod. A special tour, which includes training at the Shaolin Temple & Wudang Mountain. As well as, wonderful sightseeing and the camaraderie and Tai Chi practice along the way – not to mention the daily banquets! It may be fully booked (ring 02 9797 9355 to check) but there is also another tour to Wudang in Oct 2011. Check the website for info, pictures and video of our China tours.
Our popular ‘Summer Short Course’ will return in January – to give you a chance to play some traditional health arts before Term 1 resumes in February. This will be at the Holy Spirit Hall in Villiers St, New Farm on Tuesdays (Jan 11, 18 & 25) from 6.30pm to 8pm. The ancient “Tao Yin”, Master Rod will guide you through the eight exercises and additional Taoist energy skills. The focus is to stimulate the flow of Qi around the body through the use of: stretching, breathing, acumassage and mindful awareness.
Also, our fourth Annual Straddie Wreckreation Weekend will be on in March from Fri 25th to Sun 27th. This event has been booked out for all three previous years, so stay tuned – when we announce the booking details, those in first with their deposits will secure their places!
Active & Healthy sessions will mostly re-commence for the year in the week of Jan 10th in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Check out the new locations like Hendra, Wynnum and Bellbowrie, as well as all the regular favourites. BCC GOLD is going great at Sandgate on Wednesdays 9.30am and Stafford is moving to Keong Pk from 20th Jan.
2011 Academy classes commence in the week starting 31st January, again what, can I say “all the details are on the new look website”. Let us know your thoughts and/or ideas.
